The EmpowerMen Project, a part of Winnipeg’s Indigenous-led Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre, is holding a FREE public event, entitled Game Changers: Building a Better Sports Culture, at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights on November 10, 2026. The event will begin with a screening of Code of Misconduct, a documentary by award-winning director Sébastien Trahan, which investigates the 2018 scandal involving five members of Canada’s World Junior hockey team who were charged with sexual assault, highlighting allegations of cover-ups by Hockey Canada and the deeper culture surrounding the sport. It will be followed by a panel discussion with experts from the field.

Game Changers: Building a Better Sports Culture is designed to foster meaningful dialogue while promoting awareness, respect, and prevention to help make the hockey and wider sports community safe, inclusive, and enjoyable for everyone, particularly women and girls. Through engaging discussions and expert perspectives, we will explore ways to strengthen positive sports culture, challenge harmful norms, and equip athletes, coaches, parents, volunteers, and leaders with a healthier model for both the sport and their communities.
Confirmed Speakers:
Rick Westhead - Rick Westhead is an award-winning investigative journalist with TSN and CTV and the bestselling author of We Breed Lions: Confronting Canada's Troubled Hockey Culture. His reporting has exposed abuse, misconduct, and systemic failures in Canadian sport.
Tim Skuce - Dr. Tim Skuce is an Associate Professor at Brandon University whose work explores masculinity, gender, violence prevention, and the role of men in creating healthier communities.
Jay Johnson - Dr. Jay Johnson is a Professor at the University of Manitoba with expertise in sport, physical education, and the social and cultural dimensions of athletics. His work examines how sport can promote inclusion, well-being, and positive development among athletes and communities.
Trevor Buhnai - Trevor Buhnai is CEO of Hockey Manitoba. Drawing on his 30 years of leadership experience, Trevor guides the organization’s operations, partnerships, governance transition, and strategic direction, with an organizational focus on strengthening member support, accountability, Safe Sport, and positive hockey environments across the province.
Jeff Hamilton (Master of Ceremonies) - Jeff Hamilton is an award-winning investigative and sports reporter currently with The Canadian Press, following an 11-year run at the Winnipeg Free Press. In 2025, he received the Canadian Association of Journalists Award for Best Investigative Work in the written category, as well as the Don McGillivray Award.
Hennes Doltze (EmpowerMen Host) - Hennes Doltze is the Project Leader of EmpowerMen. Through education, partnerships, and community dialogue, he works to promote healthy masculinity, accountability, and safer communities.
EmpowerMen was founded in 2022 to engage men and boys to help confront sexual exploitation and sex trafficking, inviting them to become part of the solution rather than fueling the problem. We activate men and communities through youth workshops, community training, online engagement, public and sector-specific events, corporate relationship building, and research projects.
